How it works

What is a UK car insurance group?

Thatcham Research rates every new UK car on behalf of the Association of British Insurers (ABI). The rating — called an ABI Group — runs from 1 to 50 and reflects how costly a car is likely to be to insure in a standard fully-comprehensive policy.

The rating accounts for repair costs, parts prices, how long repairs take, how the car performs in safety tests, and security features like immobilisers and alarms. A Group 1 car is the cheapest to insure; Group 50 covers the most expensive.

Group ratings cover entire model lines but individual trims matter: a base-spec hatchback may sit in Group 8 while the turbocharged hot version hits Group 28. Performance derivatives (AMG, M, RS, VXR) routinely sit well above the standard model range.

The UK fleet average sits around Group 22. Anything below Group 15 is generally considered a budget-friendly choice for insurance.
