Kadjar Passes 81.9% — Brake Pads and Rust Hit Early

From 78,274 tests, the Renault Kadjar passes first time 81.9% of the time at a relatively low average mileage of 44,514. Brake pads worn below 1.5mm and tyre tread are the most common failure causes — not unusual, but notable given how little distance most Kadjars have covered. A 2015 car needed fresh rear discs and pads at 40,000 miles, costing £325. That is early for a compact SUV.

The TCe automatic has drawn complaints about juddering when pulling away, with owners reporting the need to reach nearly 1,900 rpm before the car moves cleanly. Infotainment system failures — a flat screen within weeks of delivery on a 2019 facelift car — are a separate nuisance. Overall the Kadjar passes well, but keep an eye on brakes and check for the TCe gearbox stutter on a test drive.

Year-band analysis

Best year to buy. Worst to avoid.

First-time MOT pass rate split by registration band. A 9.6-point gap between bands means the year you buy Renault Kadjar has a real effect on what turns up at the garage.

Best band to buy

88.8%

2021+ registration

the 2021-on band climbs to 88.8% — a 9.6-point improvement. Tests in this band average 23,627 miles — roughly 38K miles fewer on the clock than the older band. Failures here are mostly wear items: blade defective, has ply or cords exposed — the structural issues that drag down older examples don't appear in the top-10 for this band. Post-2020 examples are early in their MOT life and generally show the cleanest records.

Band to be cautious about

79.2%

Pre-2018 registration

On the older band (pre-2018), the data shows a 79.2% pass rate against a fleet average of 88.8% on the newer band. The main culprits logged at test: ball joint dust cover severely deteriorated, less than 1.5 mm thick, and tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm. Average mileage on test for this band is 61,566 miles — high-mileage wear items are a recurring theme. Honest John records: "Report of noise seemingly from the front wheels of a 2015/65 Renault Kadjar 1.6 dCi 4WD at 42,000 miles. Turned out to be both front wheel bearings which Renault replaced…"

Best band to buy: 2021+ (88.8% first-time pass). Worst band to avoid: pre-2018 (79.2% pass). That's a 9.6-point spread across 73,861 older tests and 2,827 newer ones — year of build makes a material difference on this model.

Use the failure ranking as a pre-test checklist or a haggling lever. Treat the headline pass rate as a fleet-wide trend, not a guarantee on any individual car.

If you own a Kadjar and your last MOT looked nothing like the ranked failures above, that's normal — individual cars vary widely. The ranking shows the patterns testers flag most often across the country.
