The rule
One cutoff date decides most cars.
UK clean air zones use the Euro emissions standard — a Europe-wide classification that tightened in stages. For the purposes of ULEZ charges, the practical proxy is the car's first registration date.
Petrol cars: compliant if registered on or after 1 January 2006 (Euro 4). Older petrol cars pay £12.50/day in London ULEZ and £8/day in Birmingham CAZ. Bristol does not charge petrol cars at all.
Diesel cars: compliant if registered on or after 1 September 2015 (Euro 6). A small number of diesels were certified Euro 6 before that date — if your diesel was registered between January 2015 and August 2015, use the government's official ULEZ checker to confirm.
Electric and hydrogen vehicles are fully exempt from all CAZ charges. LPG, CNG, and bi-fuel cars follow the petrol rule.
Manchester Clean Air Zone was scrapped in 2024 — it never came into force. Do not budget for a Manchester charge.
