Renault Laguna: challenging MOT record across 15,606 tests

The Renault Laguna is a diesel-powered car sold in the UK market across multiple generations, covering a broad date range in the test population.

MOT data from 15,606 tests puts this car on a 64.7% first-time pass rate, well below the UK fleet average. Average mileage at test is 115,803 miles. The most common fail item is fractured or weakened suspension spring, followed by failed number plate light.

Honest John owner records point to gearbox noise or CVT reliability and premature clutch wear as the recurring problems to check before buying used.

The Laguna's pass rate warrants caution in the used market. Factor in likely first-test remedial work on the common failure items and get a pre-purchase inspection that covers the specific items this car trips on most.

  3. 20 Nov 2013

General Motors PK5, PK6, PF1, PF6 manual transmission failure common in Laguna, Vivaro, Movano, Traffic and Primastar. The 'built-in' fault, which will result in failure, irrespective of how the vehicle is driven or serviced, is that the gearboxes are assembled in such a way that the preload on the bearings is massively over-torqued, which results in bearing failure, and the total destruction of the box from as low as 20k upwards. In some cases the boxes are built up so tight that it makes turning the box over by hand virtually impossible. Once the bearings are replaced, and shimmed correctly, the box will “go on” virtually indefinitely.

Buying or keeping a Laguna?

Use the failure ranking as a pre-test checklist or a haggling lever. Treat the headline pass rate as a fleet-wide trend, not a guarantee on any individual car.

If you own a Laguna and your last MOT looked nothing like the ranked failures above, that's normal — individual cars vary widely. The ranking shows the patterns testers flag most often across the country.
