1. BEARING FAILURE COULD RESULT IN WHEEL-END FIRE

   Defect

   The wheel hub units fitted with FAG bearings may exhibit premature wear in certain trailer applications. Prolonged use in these applications may result in degradation of the bearing grease. Early indicators may include noise roughness excessive end-play high running temperatures and ABS signal error. If this condition remains undetected it may potentially lead to a bearing failure axle damage and in extreme cases a wheel-end fire. Timken bearings are not affected.

   Remedy

   Recall the units that are likely to be affected and on certain trailer applications replace the hub units. Other applications check for symptoms and if necessary replace hub unit.

   Defect

   Certain axles were fitted with bearing units which may exhibit premature wear in certain trailer applications. Prolonged use in these applications may result in degradation of the bearing grease. Early indicators may include noise roughness excessive end-play high running temperatures and ABS signal error. This may lead to bearing failure axle damage and/or in extreme instances wheel located fire.

   Remedy

   Depending on trailer application either replace hub units or check and retorque hub assembly. Where retorquing is considered adequate recheck for symptoms and if necessary replace bearing.
